Player Unknown Battlegrounds – or PUBG as it is known by players for short – is an online multiplayer game that has gone on to capture the heart of many gamers. First released in the year 2017 (March) to the beta users, the game gathered a lot of acclaims and that prompted a final, worldwide release in the December of the same year.
It has since gone on to make the Wikipedia’s list of best-selling PC games of all times, considering the game had reached the one million copy sales mark.
Player Unknown Battlegrounds Overview
Described by the Steam engine as ‘not just a game,’ PUBG was developed by Brendan Greene (also known as Player Unknown). The game operates on the last man standing mode. At the start the, the player is given nothing of their own, leaving them to fight for and locate items for their survival around the map.
The players are engaged with other players who they encounter throughout the game. To give the whole experience a more robust side, the game is developed around community feedback too.
As at the time of writing, there has been no offline development released for the game. That means interested players would have to get online to compete against others. Speaking of others, there is the capacity to play against 1 -99 people, taking the total capacity of players at any one time to 100.
The player that covers the 8 x 8 km playing field successfully, while defeating others in the same race, becomes the winner of the game.
Player Unknown Battlegrounds Gameplay
The game starts with involve players being dropped via parachute onto the playing area which measures 8 x 8km in all directions. The flight path of the plane is not fixed, so the players are required to determine the best conditions for exiting the plane themselves.
As soon as they land on the ground, they can then begin to search abandoned houses and sites for weapons, gear and other supplies that would help them get to the end of the game.
Occasionally, the player is in a high-risk zone. While the chances of death in these places are high, there are also better supplies there. Should a player di during the course of gameplay, the others can loot them of their gear and supplies.
While starting with an initial area of 8 x 8 km, the map starts to shrink constantly. When it shrinks, the players are expected to get into the enclosed zone, lest they suffer incremental damage to health. Warnings would be given before this encroachment occurs so the players can get into the safer zone faster.
Note that the word ‘safe’ is used loosely here as the smaller spaces ensure increased encounters with other players.
Occasionally, locations would be targeted and bombed. To keep the gameplay fair, players are notified beforehand and given time to move out of the red zone. Likewise, it is not uncommon to see an aircraft fly by and drop a load of supplies that the players can access. This usually forms the location for another encounter with other members playing the game.
The player can choose to play in either first person or third person mode. Both of these have slight advantages over the others, and they do have disadvantages too. To eliminate unfair upper hands, the server settings can be forced to play everyone in the same mode.
Lasting more than half an hour sometimes, a full round is usually graded based on different criteria. This scoresheet would include details such as the number of players killed, length of time stayed alive, damages inflicted on other players and the likes. The players are then rewarded with currency points based on their performances. In turn, the currency can be used to buy cosmetic crates to tune the character’s appearance.
